The Base

This can can be either:- Foam, Fibre, Springs, Pocket Springs, coir Lambswool or Latex or a combination of one or two or three of these components

The Foam

Over 90% of all baby mattresses have a foam content. Foam is the key component and comes in a vast selection of qualities. To understand what you are buying it's worthwhile knowing how foam is classified. It's not that complicated.... honestly!

Foam quality is described in two numbers - the most common quality used in over 90% of all cot mattresses is 24/130 foam.

The first number "24" is the weight of the foam per kilo and indicates the density or the foam and this affects the durability.

The second number "130" is the amount of pressure in Newtons it takes to compress the foam to 40% of its size. This measurement is called Indentation Load Deflection (ILD) and this assesses the firmness or the feel of foam. It indicates how it yields to weight and pressure and how long your mattress will last.

24/130 foam classed as CMHR 28,is a basic quality most companies use to pass the British Standard. Obviously as these numbers increase you will get a higher quality foam, This foam will last longer give more comfort and support.

Nightynite® branded products use.a much higher quality foam than the standard 24/130. We use 30 /150 and 50 / 215.This very high quality makes a massive difference to the comfort, support and durability.

N.B. if a company does not quote the specification of foam used in a cot mattress, odds- on will be the lowest used to pass the British Standards and it certainly will not last five years probably start to dip after a years wear depending on the activity, heat / dampness and weight of the occupant;

Pocket Springs

By taking out 60% of the foam and replacing it with a sprung core you will reduce the heat in your mattress significantly. Foam is an insulator and air will flow through the springs. Pocket springs will last longer than basic springs and be more comfortable for your baby as your baby gets heavier and more active. There are cheap pocket springs available linked only on the length and not by the length and width and they poor support.

The springs in a sprung or pocket sprung cot mattress are 6 cm deep, to achieve the British Standards of a 10 cm deep mattress you add 2 cm of foam either side. N.B this is a thin layer of foam!

As your baby gets heavier their extra weight will push down on the 2 cm layer of foam and bring the pocket springs into operation. This is where a higher quality foam is vital. At the cot mattress company we use 30/150 foam and 50/215 foam to cover our pocket springs.

As you are now becoming a baby mattress expert you can now see how using much higher quality foam will make a huge difference to the comfort, support and durability of a cot- bed mattress

Fibre

Points for - Fibre is inexpensive compared to foam. They can be made from recycled plastic bottles (great for the environment) Fibre does not have the same initial chemical smell like foam and consequently does not need airing for a day or two before use. Fibre is also cooler than foam.

Points against - Most fibre it is not as supportive as even the average grade of foam, It is certainly not as durable, it may be fine for cot mattress for temporary use at the grandparents house or for filling pillows. We have examined all fibre baby mattresses sold to date and they are really poor.

Latest Fibre News

However there is a new firmer more durable fibre we are currently testing, So far we are very impressed, should be on sale by April 2019. It will be more durable and supportive and we will make it as comfortable as foam buy putting in pocket springs and a lambswool layer each side.

So those customers that wish to consider recycling and the future of the planet have an opportunity to buy a very good quality cot mattress made in part from recycled plastic bottles.

Natural

The cores are are mostly made from coir and lambswool, sometimes coir lambswool and springs. Their attraction is they are petro-chemical free and  firmer than 28 weight foam and more durable. A problem occurs if you wish you keep to the all natural format when it comes to the covers. No natural fabric is totally waterproof so a cotton cover will not protect your cot mattress core. However there are other options available on our web site.

Covers, breathable, easily removed for machine washing and give waterproof protection to the core that is a basic requirement. Extra quality covers give more comfort, temperature control, and a big plus is if they are of the Easychange® design:- A protective base cover with zip on Easychange® toppers.

he messaged is getting to all of us, and we are all starting to think more and more about our planet and the earth’s resources, landfill and recycling.

Considering  buying a cot mattress?  I offer the following:-

In the late 80’s, foam along with some other things were blamed for cot deaths. I wont go into all the details of the dreadful panic this caused but along with other advice out came the phrase “NEW BABY NEW MATTRESS”.  This was to avoid new babies put on old mattresses that had previous babies bacteria on them, or where the foam had deteriorated and was not giving good support etc,

Things have changed. You can now buy very high density foam 50 /215 (50 CMHR) encapsulating high quality pocket springs with waterproof protection and zip off machine washable toppers.

These mattresses will last you at least 5 years and probably a lot longer, if you look after them as per the instructions.  You can use them for your next baby too or even pass them on for use for another baby to use because no body fluids can get to the mattress core and react with the foam. The mattress will keep its  new look and not dip or dent.

You can keep the mattress as good as the day you bought it.  Not only because of the waterproof protection cover  and the washable interchangeable toppers . but primarily because of the very high density foam that encapsulates the pocket springs.

This mattress is of fantastic quality, it will offer your first  baby 20000 hours of comfortable excellent supportive sleep, as you use it with confidence in a cot or cot bed as a toddler mattress. It will take the extra weight and punishment.

The other option is to buy a cheap mattress without the waterproof protection and interchangeable covers and made with cheap weight foam or fibre. It will dent and dip, get soiled and you will buy a couple of replacements in five years. then throw it away.

There are  nearly  800,000 babies  born in the UK, currently every year the baby mattresses that we commit to landfill will reach John ‘O’ Groats to Lands End. This need not happen.

Yes the message of “Think about the future of our planet “ has got to us at the Cot Mattress Company too. Over the past few years we have  changed the products we sell and how we package them..

More to come about the options available.
