When You Buy A New Moses Basket Why Is The Mattress Such Poor Quality?

Posted by Roger Abrahams on

Ironic really the purpose of a Moses basket is to provide a healthy sleep environment for your baby's first 1500 hours but the mattress supplied is  the lowest possible quality.

It is all about price. lets take an average Moses basket say £40, if it had a  worthwhile mattress in it would have to sell for £65 -£75

The photo on the internet shop would not look any different to one that has a lovely safe comfortable mattress in it.  So it would not sell!

Parents-to- be see it conforms to BS EN 1466: 2014 so must be OK

The mattresses included with most Moses baskets are the thinnest cheapest bit of foam or fibre.

If it has a waterproof cover, it is in not breathable. If it does not have a waterproof protector then the body fluids will go through the sheet onto the foam or fibre pad. Not in any way hygienic.
.
OK a new baby is very light 7 lbs average, but they double their weight in 3 months. What they are lying on is not supportive, comfortable, welcoming   hygienic etc

When you read all the product information about the Moses basket you are about to buy it rarely mentions the mattress the most important component!

Honestly I just picked one at random:-

  • Why Buy Me?
  • Cosy, reassuring place for your newborn to sleep
  • Lightweight and breathable fabric
  • Sturdy & lightweight white wicker
  • Two carry handles for portability
  • Adjustable hood for shade
  • Suitable from birth up to 9KG

  • Specifications
  • Dimensions (Base): 66 x 29 x 26 cm
  • Fabric: 100% Cotton / Filling: 100% Polyester
  • Dressings are removable and machine washable
  • Conforms to BS EN 1466: 2014
  • Made with love in the UK

NOT A MENTION ABOUT THE MATTRESS!!  BECAUSE THE MATTRESS SUPPLIED WITH THE MOSES BASKET IS WORTHLESS, DREADFUL  NOT SUPPORTIVE NOT BREATHABLE, WASHABLE  OR HYGIENIC. IT HAS NO BENEFITS.

Yet it is the most important component in the Moses Basket!!

The future of the planet

Why make a mattress that will have to go to landfill after use by one baby?

After three months the Moses basket will still look like new. Why not have a mattress that will last a few years?

A mattress that offers breathability waterproof protection to the core and be washable, supportive and comfortable?

This can be achieved with foam or natural coir and lambswool and a choice of quality covers and waterproof protective safe easy-wipe-clean  PU

Maybe when you get your new Moses basket dump the poor quality mattress and choose a lovely mattress for your precious new arrival.
