Natural Crib mattress base

The base of the natural crib mattresses are made of coir and lambswool they can vary in thickness between different companies. Either deeper coir and less lambswool or more lambswool and less coir but the mattress should not exceed 5cm deep the British standard guidelines.

Nightynite® crib mattresses are made with a central coir pad and with two layers of lambswool on one side and one on the other. This gives you an opportunity to choose a firmer or medium-firm side whatever suits you and your baby

Natural Crib Mattress Covers

Choosing a cover is a little more complicated if you have just a cotton cover it will not be waterproof so there is considerable risk of bloody fluids getting to the core of the crib mattress. We use a fabric called Outlux that is 92% natural save for a middle liner that is waterproof so your baby only comes in contact with cotton.

The advantages for natural crib mattresses

Generally people go for a natural mattress because they consider foam is the enemy. Foam is petroleum based and closed cell and can give off an initial smell until it airs out, or as the tech people say "degasses". It is also an insulation material and will generally be hotter than coir and wool. also it takes over a thousand years to decompose

A disadvantage of a totally natural crib mattress

The downside of natural Outlux is that is not fully breathable, if your baby's temperature control is a priority with you then perhaps consider a non natural cover.

Best of both worlds perhaps?

Consider using a fabric like Coolmax and Maxispace or Microfibre cover over a waterproof liner on top of the natural coir and lambswool base . Foam free, waterproof, plus a highly breathable sleep surface with temperature control.
